So this morning I walked into a chaos storm. Not sure what happened but it seemed like half my users about 20 of them were throwing errors and after a reboot we get the black screen with cursor after logging in.

This started this morning. I am assuming a bad update. But i am trying to figure out if anyone else is having this issue or why its so wide spread in my company. We use Intune to manage our machines. Anybody have any insight on this? We’ve seen this before, and honestly think it’s a video driver issue, but we’ve never been able to bring it back to life after it happens. We just end up re-imaging it, once it’s been re-imaged we haven’t seen the issue crop back up. I had 3 machines do this to me this morning.

I have no idea which of the updates might have caused the issue, but luckily for me, none of the machines were bricked. We simply hard-powered them down and they booted normally after that. Thanks, Its just weird that prior to this we had a lot of application type errors, Outlook and Teams decided to stop working and then rebooting brings us to the black screen and its affecting several types of devices with different graphics cards.

I used to experience this a lot with Windows 8 and then earlier versions of Unchecking that usually took care of it for me. Beta worked fine, then Prod always has 20 or more incidences of a driver getting screwed up.

Every time, all the time, every Update release something always has to been fixed. Saw this twice last week. Suspected it was an Intel Internal Graphics Driver issue. Power off, unplug from the wall, wait 30 seconds, power back on and it usually fixes the issue. Greetings everyone. So we finally figured out our particular issue.

It had to do with an update to the AppLocker configuration we have in Intune. Not sure exactly why its having issues as everything is a copy and past from our on prem server. Wasnt a MS update or driver issue. Thanks everyone for the replys. Uhm, I had exactly the same problem, the same day on three desktops, all after installing the latest Windows 10 update from the DevChannel.

So, clearly not the latest stable one, but the timing of this happening to so many people since Feb 4th this is reported in various other places might point to something being released with the latest updates.

Had to rool back and suspend updates for a week to prevent the problem for reoccurring overnight. Get answers from your peers along with millions of IT pros who visit Spiceworks.
